Have you ever stopped and thought about why in the heck we need to sleep in the first place? Just think around 1/3 of our lives are spent sleeping. Have you ever thought about what it would be like to actually get that time back? The bad news is that just to operate correctly we actually need lots of sleep. Otherwise we would go berserk and die if our human system didn’t get enough rest. That is the worst thing that could happen and before that other bad things occur. One study from the University of Chicago reports that lack of sleep can cause calcium buildup in the arteries of the heart. What this really means is that the buildup of plague can fracture open and pieces of it can damn up a area leading to a stroke or heart attack. Because of examples such as this it has been estimated that if a person doesn’t get enough sleep their risk of getting diabetes as well heart disease doubles.
Another health risk that could happen is obesity. This makes sense to me because our bodies are survival machines and lack of sleep is stressful. Our body thinks a famine may be coming so it starts to store a bunch of food in case it needs it. Mood is another major problem that happens because of sleep deprivation. Just speaking of myself if I don’t get enough sleep I get moody, inpatient and not very social. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that this could hurt someone’s social life, including close friends, family and relationships. Accidents and safety has to do with the most common overlooked problem. Just recently in the news I have been hearing about air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job.
How about car accidents, how many collisions do you think are caused because of lack of sleep? Over 100,000 a year is a estimate for the U.S.I wonder which is more deadly texting while driving, or driving while very fatigued and half a sleep? Now you know the problems with lack of sleep the best way to counter it is to take it serious. Which means no eating a huge feast or doing crazy exercise before you try to get some rest. Alternately try doing some repetitive boring tasks or listening to some soothing music like Kenny G. Your room should be nice a quiet with no stimulating noises or lights so it’s dark. Alcohol is not good because it affects the quality of the sleep while milk is good. If you’re going to do the snack late at night bread with lots of fiber and cheese is a better choice that sugar and chocolate.
