Exercise is good for you; and that is hardly news. But people tend to take that idea and let it run away with them. But in adults, there are certain caveats to be mindful of. The time you choose to get your exercises can often have a helpful, or an adverse contribution to make. If you ever went to a sleep clinic, you’d know that doctors give you a blood test to start you out with. They are trying to measure stress hormone levels in the blood: people who are insomnia, are usually extremely sensitive to stress. The thing is, exercise is known to increase stress hormone levels in the blood for some time. And it can take a few hours for the hormones to go down. You could actually do for yourself what the sleep clinic people do to help you get to sleeping better. You could exercise close to bedtime a couple of days, and rate how you sleep in a journal. You can progressively move your exercise time farther and farther away from your bedtime, and make a note of how it affects your sleep.

Some people really benefit from exercising through the day, but keeping it well enough away from their bedtime, that there was a study done in Brazil on this. It showed that moderate levels of weight training in many people, made them drop off 40% faster, and helped them sleep 20% longer than they were used to. That sounds simple enough, if you ask me.

Problem Sleeping

I don’t know what’s going on with me, but I’ve been having a problem sleeping recently. No matter what I do, I end up tossing and turning for most of the night, and then wake up still feeling incredibly tired. I then have to muddle through the rest of the day bleary-eyed, only to go through the entire process once darkness descends.

I’ve tried all the usual tips, such as eating healthy foods, getting enough exercise, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine, but nothing has worked so far. I’m the kind of person who needs at least seven or eight hours of sleep in order to function properly, so this spate of insomnia is really taking its toll on me.

The next step for me is to probably go and visit a specialist if I continue having a problem sleeping for much longer. But that sort of thing is expensive, and I know my insurance won’t cover it, so I’d prefer to do that as a last resort only if nothing else works. In the meantime, I’ve been checking the Internet to see what other people do when they’re having a problem sleeping. Maybe some of the tips I’ve found can help me.

Some people have recommended buying one of those little acoustic machines that generates certain kinds of background noises. These machines cost about $20 and are pre-programmed with such sounds as a gently rolling ocean tide, the soothing tones of forest creatures, and even "white noise", all of which are supposed to be very helpful for those having a problem sleeping.

Since I do enjoy camping and never seem to have problems falling asleep under the stars, maybe these nature sounds would help me. At just $20, I guess it’s worth a try.

Even though I’m having a problem sleeping, I’ve never considered taking a prescription or over-the-counter sleep aid of any kind. I do not want to bring drugs into the equation, and will avoid pills at any cost. But there are some all-natural products that I’d be open to. For example, certain herbal teas are said to work wonders, so I might take a trip out to the health food store soon and scour their shelves for some special blends.

And finally, I’ve also seen some advertisements for various audio and video programs aimed at people who are having a problem sleeping. These programs apparently have subliminal messages that work on your subconscious mind, making it easier for you to unwind, relax, and fall asleep faster. Yes, it’s a step away from all-out hypnotism, but as desperate as I am, I might end up purchasing a tape or two.

Whenever I’m having a problem sleeping, I feel as though my whole life is out of whack. I’m tired all the time, I have no energy to do anything productive, and I can’t concentrate for long periods of time. I need to get this issue taken care of as soon as possible!

If you have trouble sleeping, you may be accumulating a debt that is difficult to pay back – a sleep debt. According to the National Sleep Foundation, about 6 out of 10 people in the United States suffers from problems getting a restful night of sleep.

There are many kinds of sleep disorders, including:

Insomnia. Poor quality sleep may result from inability to fall asleep, waking up frequently, waking up and being unable to return to sleep, or some combination. Females are affected more than males.

Lifestyle-related. A hectic and stressful lifestyle, work demands and over-active social lives can lead to accumulation of sleep debt. Even the use of an alarm clock can trigger more and more debt.

Sleep apnea. Obstructed or blocked air passages lead to loud snoring and cessation of breathing while asleep. This leads to sleep deprivation and daytime drowsiness.

Due to the prevalence of sleep-related disorders in our society, the usage of prescription sleeping pills is on the rise. But these medications for insomnia cures carry their own risks: drug carryover into the daytime leading to drowsiness, psychological dependence, physical side effects including anxiety and memory problems, and potential drug interactions. If you have been having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor about your condition and your options. Besides depression, many other potentially serious health disorders may be causing your sleeping difficulties. Don’t ignore this debt until it becomes too late to repay.
