The one thing that I hate most about hallucinatory sleep paralysis is that at the time it occurs the visions and sensations I’m feeling are just too real. In such cases you tend to panic especially when you realize you cannot move or even scream.
The funny thing is that the paralysis sets in to prevent you from doing just that. You are producing actual physical reactions to something that’s just a dream. Imagine how chaotic it would be if we reacted to everything that went on whilst we are having our dreams. So unfortunately the change from total sleep to a state of full consciousness is not always a smooth one.
If for some reason your brain wakes up in the middle of a dream you will have a hard time trying to separate reality from fiction and so the paralysis sets in. Trust me I know; uncomfortable does not even come close to describing those few moments that you struggling to move or say something. That is one thing that I’ve come to notice about sleep paralysis, the sensations are just too real to ignore.
So is there anything that can be done about it? The ways to deal with sleep paralysis are just as many as the causes. The underlying theory though is avoiding anything that will disrupt your normal sleep. Things that send signals to the brain and require it to become active. Amongst some of the things that you can avoid are excessive light. Sound and going to sleep without emptying your bladder.
