This type is caused by the pancreas, an organ in the endocrine system, manufacturing insufficient insulin.
Type II is more common in older dogs and is identified by failure of the dog body to use insulin.
Larger dogs are also more likely to get Type II diabetes mellitus. The most at risk group are obese female dogs. The good news is that with early observation and dietary control it is possible to overcome the onset of the disease. Early warnings include excessive urination and drinking, but you should also watch out for poor skin, vomiting or weakness in your dog's rear legs.
As soon as the diagnosis is found it becomes all the more essential for your dog to attend regular visits to the vet. Because certain foods are more likely to worsen the symptoms than others, your vet may also usually suggest preparing food for your dog at home instead of using commercial foods.
When choosing food for your diabetic dog, pay close attention to the label. You should check to make sure it has low levels of sugar, carbohydrates and sodium. If feeding your dog dry food make sure to supply him with enough clean drinking water as it is vital for good kidney health. It is also recommended to give him smaller amounts of food two or three times a day rather than one full meal. Just like human patients, dogs with the worst symptoms may have to have daily insulin injections.
